Marc Dooley - Musical Director

Marc Dooley began his musical education as a clarinet player, studying with Peter Howes at Trinity College of Music junior department. As a student at the University of York he started conducting, and directed most of the university ensembles in his four years there. At the same time he continued his clarinet studies with Lesley Schatzberger and pursued a range of academic interests, achieving an MA in musical performance practice in 1998. Since leaving York, Marc has worked with several orchestras and ensembles. These include, among others, the Amadeus Chorus and Orchestra, Brent Symphony Orchestra, Camden Chamber Orchestra, Edgware Symphony Orchestra and Kingston Philharmonia.

In 2001 Marc was appointed Music Director of the Fulham Symphony Orchestra, and has forged a strong relationship with this highly talented and ambitious group of musicians. Together they have explored familiar and unfamiliar repertoire with great success.

Marc has a strong interest in contemporary music. In 1998, the composer Nicola Lefanu invited him to conduct her opera The Green Children. He has conducted many world premières, as well as the more established modern repertory.

As a clarinettist, Marc has appeared as a soloist on many occasions. His performance of Malcolm Arnold’s Second Clarinet Concerto at the Queen Elizabeth Hall was televised as part of BBC Young Musicians. However, his most high-profile clarinet performance to date was a performance in 2002 of John Cage’s totally silent work 4’33’’, given in the midst of a copyright dispute between Peters Edition Ltd and Mike Batt. This performance was broadcast on television and radio to millions of completely baffled viewers and listeners.

Marc has taken part in several masterclasses with conductors that include Adrian Brown, Elgar Howarth, Jacek Kasprszyk, Odaline de la Martinez, Howard Williams and Benjamin Zander.

Marc enjoys writing about music, and has contributed to several publications.
